What does a bus with driver cost?

There is no fixed price for a bus with driver: the price comes from your route, driving time, vehicle size, date and extras such as tolls and parking fees. That is why it is best to calculate the cost for your actual trip – it takes about a minute and commits you to nothing.

In the bus industry this is unusual: if you need a bus, you send out enquiries and wait for quotes. Busly calculates immediately instead – using the same factors operators work with, from kilometres driven to driving hours, tolls and season.

These six factors make up your bus price

There is no fixed price per kilometre for a bus. These six factors determine the price you need to calculate when hiring a bus.

Route and distance

The kilometres driven are the largest item. On top of that come the bus getting to your pickup point and returning to its depot – even without passengers on board.

Duration and time on the road

A day trip costs less than a multi-day tour. If the bus stays on site and waits, that time is charged as well.

Size of the bus

From a minibus for eight people to a double-decker for eighty: the larger the vehicle, the higher its fuel use, road tolls and fixed costs.

Driver and driving hours

Driving and rest periods are regulated by law. Long routes or early departures require a second driver, which noticeably affects the price.

Date and season

Weekends, school holidays, public holidays and the spring and summer peak season cost more than a weekday in winter.

Costs along the way

Tolls, parking fees, low-emission zones and, on multi-day trips, the driver's overnight stay are added to the driving itself.

How to book a bus at a lower price

The price for the very same trip can differ considerably depending on your date and planning. Four levers are entirely in your hands – knowing them often means booking an identical route noticeably cheaper. Best to factor them in before you calculate your costs.

Ask early

The closer your date gets, the fewer buses remain available. Asking several weeks ahead will as a rule get you the better prices.

Stay flexible on dates

A weekday instead of a Saturday, or a week outside the holidays, often lowers the price considerably. When in doubt, simply request two dates.

Include the return

Outbound and return together cost less than two separate trips, because the empty run of the bus between the two dates is avoided entirely.

Avoid empty runs

For short stays the bus is often cheaper waiting on site than driving back empty twice. So tell us your planned schedule right away.

Frequently asked questions about bus hire costs

The questions customers ask us most often before calculating their bus price.

For 50 people a full-size coach is the usual choice. The price depends on route, duration and date – the same group size can cost very differently for a regional day trip than for a multi-day tour. Enter your route above to calculate the price for your actual trip instead of working with an average.

For around 30 people a midibus or small coach is typically used. It is cheaper than a full coach, uses less fuel and pays lower tolls. Whether the smaller bus works for 30 people depends on your luggage – calculate both options and compare.

A daily rate on its own says little, because the kilometres driven make up the largest share. A 200-kilometre trip and a 700-kilometre trip cost very differently on the same day. That is why we always calculate the actual trip rather than a flat daily rate.

You need four things: start and destination, date and time, the number of passengers, and whether there is a return trip. Enter them above and you will get prices from operators serving your route. It is free and non-binding.

There is no single price per kilometre. Distance is part of it, alongside driver costs, the approach trip, tolls and your date. On short routes the approach weighs more heavily; on long routes the price per kilometre goes down.

A minibus for eight to twenty people is the most affordable option with a driver. It uses less fuel, pays no truck toll and is more flexible in cities. For transfers and small groups it is usually the most economical choice.

Yes. Prices on Busly include driver, fuel, tolls, insurance and VAT. Anything that could be charged on top is stated in the offer before you book – there are no later demands.

The calculation is free and non-binding. Submitting a request commits you to nothing, and you decide only after comparing whether and with whom to book.
